Aslan Maskhadov was born on November 16, 1942, in Grozny, Chechnya. He lived there until the age of nine when his family was evacuated to Tashkent. When he was sixteen he joined the newly formed Chechen National Congress (CNC). Aslan became one of the most powerful figures in Chechnya during the 1990s
He served as Prime Minister (1994–1996) and President (1996–1999). After Russian forces invaded Chechnya in 1999, Aslan fled to the mountains with his family. The Russian forces eventually found him and detained him.
He was later executed in 2004 by an agent of his former ally, Shamil Basayev, after having been accused by Russia of plotting a coup.
